Beer and Ale Brewery Announces Fall in Profits

Fri, 04 Dec 2009

Marston’s brewery has announced a drop in profit for the last financial year but Chief Executive Ralph Findlay remains optimistic about the company’s performance. Marstons, the brewery which produces a number of beers and premium ales including Marston’s Pedigree, suffered a 1.4 per cent decrease in revenue last year, while operating profit fell by 5.7 per cent. The brewery owns a total of 1,688 tenanted or leased pubs, and managed 496 pubs, employing more than 11,500 people across the UK.

Chief Executive Ralph Findlay urged there were positives to be taken, and pointed to the severe difficulties that had afflicted the company in the past year. Most recently, Marston’s Jennings brewery in Cockermouth was flooded, but Mr Findlay is convinced Marston’s can perform strongly in the pub and drinks industry, having seen an improvement in trading during the second half of the year. Momentum gathered particular pace in the last nine weeks of the year, during which time managed like for like sales rose by 2.7 per cent resulting in a 0.6 increase for the year. Food sales in the same period rose by 2.8 per cent.
