The Beer on the Wye festival in Hereford had to close early on Sunday after it ran out of beer. The allure of the various beers and ciders typically attracts around 3,000 to the Herefordshire festival over the course of the three day event, though 3,800 had already attended by Saturday night, revealed Mark Haslam from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
Mr Haslam apologised for any disappointment caused by the closure, claiming the festival organisers had not been ready for the increased visitor numbers which saw the festival drunk completely dry. The premature closure of the festival is even more astonishing given that there was a contingency plan in place for such an event, with festival organisers having ordered an emergency delivery of 18 barrels of alcoholic drinks on Saturday afternoon. The event managers also had to stop Sundays family fun schedule early, as food had also run out.
From the first two days of the festival, Mr Haslam noted that there had been an increase in the popularity of local beers, and enabled the festival to appeal to drinkers of all ages. He promised that next years festival would have more beer and a larger back up supply.
