The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Great Welsh Beer and Cider festival is to be held in Cardiff this week, celebrating its twentieth anniversary. The event, first held in 1989 at the STAR Centre in Splott, begins today at the Cardiff International Arena and runs until Saturday. The festival is open from 11am to 11pm on all three days, though plastic glasses will be used tomorrow due to a city centre ban on glasses due to an Oasis concert being held at the Millennium Stadium .
At the time of its conception in 1989, the festival aimed to give people the chance to sample a wide variety of styles of the UKs real ales and beer. Cider was introduced to the selection in the mid-1990s as festival goers became increasingly interested in real ciders . The draw of fine ale and cider is expected to pull in at least 5,500 people this week.
Brian Francis, the Cardiff CAMRA branch secretary, revealed that there would be nearly 200 different real ales on offer, with as many as 50 ciders and perries . Mr Francis also spoke of his organisations exhaustive efforts in obtaining casks of beers from as many of the 30 plus breweries in Wales .
