More than 1,000 people attended the annual beer festival at Ripon Cathedral in Ripon, North Yorkshire. Although the weather was cold and overcast, the Bank Holiday Monday event raised over £4,000 for the cathedrals development campaign. Visitors drank more than 1,200 pints of real ale and cider over the course of the day, as the event came close to equalling its takings from the previous year despite the poor weather.
The festival offered a choice of 15 beers and 2 ciders from breweries around the country. Knaresborough-based Roosters brewery provided staff to man the pumps as well as the dispending equipment. It isnt often that cathedrals invite alcohol related festivals, though in this case, the money raised is going towards the cathedral restoration project. The project will cost £350,000 in total and take more than nine months to complete.
Campaign manager Margaret Hammond said, Considering the weather, we did really well and it didn't dampen our spirits. We were just slightly down on the takings for last year but the weather was very good 12 months ago. Over the last couple of years we noticed quite a lot of children were coming along with their parents so we thought these events would provide something for them.
