Britains Strongest Beer Faces Ban

Thu, 12 Nov 2009

The alcohol watchdog Portman Group is set to ban British stores from stocking the UK’s strongest beer . The ban is not due to the 18.2 per cent alcohol content of the beer, but because of the packaging. The label on a bottle of Tokyo beer reads, ‘Everything in moderation, including moderation itself. What logically follows is that you must, from time, have excess.’ The beer is brewed in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, by BrewDog .

BrewDog were informed of the complaint from Alcohol Focus Scotland last week. The body claims that the labelling doesn’t help to promote safe and responsible drinking. The complaint has been provisionally upheld by Portman’s independent complaints panel which has given BrewDog until 25th November to appeal.

BrewDog director James Watt said the company had not yet decided whether to appeal the ban, but insisted they would not be changing the labelling. Mr Watt claims the watchdog is funded by the sale of cheap alcohol, and pointed out that a bottle of vodka is available for the same price as some of BrewDog’s beers . Mr Watt claims the high alcohol content is necessary in order to increase the amount of complex flavours in the company’s beers.
