Arthurs Day Marks 250 Years of Guinness

Thu, 24 Sep 2009

Today marks the 250th anniversary of famous Irish brewer Guinness. The brewery went into business 250 years ago today, with celebrations set to take place across the world to mark Arthur’s Day. The milestone will provide drinkers across the world with an excuse to enjoy a pint in commemoration of founder Arthur Guinness , with patrons set to raise their glasses at 17:59 at Dublin’s St James’s Gate to celebrate the anniversary.

A number of famous artists and celebrities will join in with the celebrations, with Estelle, Kasabian , and Tom Jones just a few of the big names to be involved in the festivities. Cat Deeley and Ronan Keating will be presenting the main concert at the Guinness Storehouse, whilst 28 of Dublins pubs will play host to artists looking to celebrate the milestone. The Hon Desmond Guinness, the great, great, great, great grandson of Arthur, will be the guest of honour at the town’s Courtyard Hotel.

The global reach of the beer and its brand is reflected by the fact that artists will also be performing in pubs in Cameroon, Kuala Lumpur and Lagos to mark the occasion. Multinational drinks giant Diageo now own Guinness, which is just 250 years into its 9,000 year lease on the St James’s Gate site.
