An East Staffordshire brewery has been banned from taking part in the Burton Beer Festival because of the way the lager is served. The Freedom microbrewery from Abbots Bromley had been due to showcase its selection of beers for the first time at the Summer Beer Festival run by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) at Burton Town Hall.
The owner of the brewery, 33 year old Ed Mayman, had been told that he would be able to exhibit the Freedom microbrewerys lagers at the show. Mr Mayman went to set up his goods at the shows cider and wine section in the town hall, with a keg of each of its products set up, including the Freedom Organic, Freedom Organic Dark and Freedom Pilsner.
However, Mr Mayman received a phonecall from festival chairman Dickie Allan yesterday just one day before the event starts. Mr Allan said the national office of CAMRA had objected to his dispending methods, believing they contravened regulations. The problem lies in the gas used by Mr Mayman to force the lager out of the keg. CAMRA guidelines require that compressed air is used, whereas Mr Mayman uses CO2. Mr Mayman said he was bitterly disappointed and annoyed by the decision.
