Small Beer Breweries Rife in Britain

Thu, 10 Sep 2009

The Good Beer Guide has revealed that there are more small breweries in Britain than in any other major industrialised nation in the world. Despite the pub industry facing a difficult climate, 71 breweries have been established in the past twelve months, at a time of falling beer sales with an estimated 50 pubs closing every week. The Good Beer Guide cited an increased demand for quirkier ales as a factor behind the increasing number of small breweries.

There are now 711 small breweries in the UK, spread throughout the country. West Yorkshire is the most populated region in terms of small breweries, with 34, followed by Norfolk with 31, whilst Derbyshire and North Yorkshire both have 28 and Devon has 27.

Editor of the Good Beer Guide, Roger Protz, labelled the UK as the undisputed top brewing country in the world, praising the diversity of alcoholic drinks brewed. Whereas other countries typically offer mainstream lagers, old ales, harvest ales, golden ales, stouts, strong ales, spring beers, bitters and even barley wines are all brewed in the UK.

There has been a greater media focus on the small brewery industry recently, which now forms a noticeable segment of the food and drink industry. This has been helped by the launch of some high profile small breweries, including Morrissey Fox – founded by actor Neil Morrissey.
