Beer Drinkers Reveal Radical Drinking Habits

Thu, 22 Apr 2010

New figures from researchers at Liverpool John Moores University have revealed the worrying extent of binge drinking in Britain. The researchers quizzed members of the public on nights out about their drinking habits, discovering that 10-15 per cent of men and 4 per cent of women customarily drink twice their recommended weekly alcohol limit in a single night. While the numbers of people drinking the equivalent of 20 pints of beer in a single night were not widespread, it is enough to worry researchers that the ‘Binge Brits’ tag may be more than a media phenomenon.

One in five of respondents had already drunk the equivalent of their weekly allowance before heading out for a night out, whether in the form of beers, ciders, spirits or wine, more than half of whom planned to continue drinking. Over the course of an evening, one in five men also claimed that they would have been drinking for over 12 hours by the time they went home.

The figures corroborate claims that more needs to be done to target the sale of cheap alcohol, rather than targeting pubs with increases on tax and duty.
