Consumer goods giant Diageo has announced positive results for the six months to December 31st 2009, with Guinness performing particularly well. Diageo saw its overall volumes increase by six per cent, with net sales up by five per cent. The company’s Christmas campaign on spirits was said to be an important factor in the improved performance, while this was also boosted by strong performances by Guinness and wine, such as Blossom Hill .

Chief executive of the drinks company, Paul Walsh, said it had been a ‘challenging’ six months, but was pleased that the group’s cost base and the ‘efficiency of its functions’ has led to a strengthening of its financial position.

At 7.6 per cent, Guinness recorded its best ever market share of beer in UK pubs, resulting in a net increase in on-trade sales of 3 per cent. Diageo also enjoyed growth in the off-trade sector, with the good performance said to be the result of smaller pre-mix and ready to serve cocktail ingredients such as Morgan’s Spiced, Schweppes and Smirnoff .

Turnover rose by 3 per cent to £5.2 billion, while operating profit dipped slightly to £1.6 billion.
