High Quality Beer Wins Yorkshire Pub Consecutive Pub of the Year Awards

Thu, 18 Feb 2010

The Campaign for Real Ale has named a Yorkshire pub as its national pub of the year for the second consecutive year. The Kelham Island Tavern pub in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, was described by this year’s judges as a ‘small gem’ with superb attention to detail and a fantastic quality of beer . In winning the award for 2009, the pub has become the first to win the award in consecutive years, a feat made all the more impressive by the flooding it suffered in 2007.

The pub was semi-derelict when licensee Trevor Wraith bought it in 2001. My Wraith restored the pub, which reopened in 2002. Mr Wraith voiced his delight at again winning the award, saying it was a great achievement. Having won the award last year, Mr Wraith said he and the staff at the pub had become even more determined to exceed expectations, with new customers travelling from afar to visit the pub.

With concerns over high taxes on beers, wines and spirits, the Kelam Island Tavern pub continues to thrive, with good food and drink sales. The award is judged on a number of criteria, including the quality of the beer, atmosphere, customer service and others.
