Weather Affecting Beer Deliveries

Thu, 07 Jan 2010

The current snowy weather in Britain is threatening to leave Scottish pubs, shops and supermarkets without that most crucial of commodities – beer . The torrid conditions have hampered efforts to deliver beer from breweries to various outlets, with an 18 tonne truck carrying 13,000 pints of beer sliding off a road in Dumfriesshire earlier this week.

A human chain had to be formed to recover the 150 kegs of beer. Other delivery drivers in Aberdeen were ordered to turn back by brewery bosses fearing a similar fate.

It is not just the deliveries which have been affected by the weather. One brewery in the Scottish borders nearly came to a standstill today with just two workers able to reach the brewery. The staff shortages are having a knock on effect, with a number of pubs, shops and supermarkets short of deliveries of beers, ciders, wines, spirits and other alcoholic drinks .

Scotland’s largest brewery, Tennent Caledonian, offered one note of positivity, having been able to keep its deliveries on track.

A number of pub chains have reported difficulties, including JD Wetherspoon and Punch Taverns .
