Calls for Wales to Expand Beer, Cider and Wine Industries

Thu, 08 Jul 2010

The committee of Welsh Assembly Ministers has called on Wales to follow the model of New Zealand in promoting its beer, cider and wine industries. The recommendation is made in a new report from the cross party Rural Development Sub-Committee which calls for a plan of action if the Welsh drinks industry is to fulfil its economic potential.

The report calls for the government to work with Welsh brewers to produce a marketing campaign aimed at promoting the Welsh drinks industry. Brewers and consumer groups have welcomed the report, which also calls for greater guidance to industry newcomers, and for greater support for research into beer ties – which force landlords to buy from pub owners – and barley and hop cultivation.

As well as the example of New Zealand, Committee Chair Glyn Thomas cited the Scottish whisky market and the presence of Guinness and Baileys in Ireland as examples of the economic benefits a well marketed national drinks campaign can have. In an effort to boost this national identify and cut costs for local cider makers, the report also calls on the government to encourage farmers to grow apples with the help of funding from the Glastir scheme.
