Scottish brewer Innis and Gunn has announced plans to compete in the fast growing American craft beer market. The independent brewer is looking into expanding into the lucrative market having recorded its best ever first quarter results, with profits up 21 per cent to £908,000. The increased profit was largely driven by improved sales to pubs, which rose 400 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2009, while the Edinburgh based brewer also enjoyed a 55 per cent increase in sales to Sweden . The figures are all the more impressive in light of figures from the British Beer and Pub Association, which reported a 9 per cent decline in beer sales in the UKs licensed premises during the first quarter.
Far from resting on their laurels, the Innis and Gunn management now plan to expand into the US craft beer market, having been traditionally been known for its speciality oak-aged beer . The brewer will ship its first order of 8,000 cases to the US this month, and hopes to emulate the success it has enjoyed in Canada, where Innis and Gunn is the best selling British bottled beer .
