New Proposals Would Halve Drink Drive Limit to One Beer

Thu, 18 Mar 2010

The government is considering halving the current drink drive limit to just one pint of beer or a single glass of wine . The current measures allow drivers no more than 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, the equivalent of two pints of beer or three small glasses of wine. However, Labour hopes to cut the limit to just a single pint of beer or glass of wine for men, while given the different way that women metabolise alcohol, they would be limited to just a small glass of wine or half a pint of beer. New motorists and HGV drivers would be subject to stricter rules, with a limit of 20mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, meaning any trips to the pub would have to be dry, with spirits very much out of the question.

Labour estimates the reduction could save 65 of the 430 deaths a year apparently caused by drink driving, while the number of serious injuries could be cut from 1,630 to 1,400, Labour claims. With a 12 week consultation required before any law amendments, any change is unlikely to occur prior to the General Election, the outcome of which could have a major bearing on any legislative change, as the Conservatives do not believe a change is justified.
